Restaurant Review – Cocochan, London – 86%
Good afternoon everyone, it’s that time again… My last two reviews at Kinkao and Donostia have gone down well with readers and restaurant owners alike, so this week I went to visit Cocochan, an in-demand pan asian restaurant and bar based in James Street, Central London.
The Review – Cocochan
Cocochan sells itself as ‘a delightful new pan-asian restaurant and lounge bar’ – which immediately sounded exciting. Although pan-Asian restaurants are now quite common, it’s not always easy to find one that can produce really good quality dishes from across an entire continent. After all, there are subtle differences in flavour and texture between say, Japanese and Thai food – that aren’t always easy for busy chefs to implement, so I was keen to see whether Cocochan could really do the job.
The restaurant itself is clean and stylishly designed. Although not quiet it was also not too packed, there was plenty of space inside, and I was seated in the corner, giving me chance to examine the intriguing wall art which gives the place a distinctively cool décor vibe.
The menu was expansive, and detailed and it took me a while to get through – it really did give a broad selection from across the whole of the Asian cuisine. I opted for Mushroom Gyoza, Tuna Sashimi and Miso Soup, followed by one of their most expensive main courses – Bulgogi Beef with Wasabi.
My starters were mostly very good quality – The sashimi was fantastic quality, although I would have liked a lot more! The gyoza were excellent, and beaten only by the outstanding main course. The beef was perfectly cooked, and the wasabi was both smooth and fiery, without any offensive aftertaste. The only slight disappointment with the meal was the Miso Soup which (considering many Asian restaurants include this free with a meal) was kind of average and nothing special.
I have no complaints at all about the staff, who were polite and courtious throughout my meal. The décor although not particularly to my taste, was smart, clean and minimal. I can definitely see how this restaurant has become a firm favourite in the area. My meal was relatively expensive (£40 in all) but there were much cheaper options that I could have opted for and it was definitely worth the money paid. I would happily come back again to try a wider selection.
