Restaurant Review – Donostia, London – 92%

 

Hello everyone! The powers that be liked my recent review of Kinkao so much that they let me write another one! I’ve got to be honest, the promise of yummy food in great restaurants is an excellent motivator for writing reviews… 

 

This week I went to visit Donostia, a very popular Basque bistro based in Seymour Place, West London.

 

The Review – Donostia

 

West London is home to some of the very best restaurants in the world – so when I decided to visit Donostia, a small but smart Basque bistro that is just a stone’s throw away from Mayfair – I knew it had a lot to live up to!

 

As with a lot of the eateries in this part of the city, space is a limiting factor, and my first impression when I entered the restaurant was that they had worked hard to make the most out of the space they had. Although the tables were not overly large, the clever floor plan meant that the restaurant did not feel too cramped, despite being nearly full when I visited. The members of staff were polite and helpful, and I was quickly shown to one of the tables towards the back of the restaurant.

 

The menu offers an intriguing selection of small dishes, with half a dozen main courses on offer. A wider selection of special dishes are also available to groups, including a spectacular looking Iberico pork shoulder that was served to a group on the adjacent table. I went a la carte, however – and decided to try a few of the small plates, before a fish main course.

 

The mini Wagyu beef burger was delicious, as were the Tempura prawns. Neither were large, but at £4 a time, I wasn’t expecting them to ruin my appetite. And, I’m glad they didn’t, because it turns out the monkfish served as a main course was absolutely fantastic. The fish was delicately cooked, and the strong, meaty flavour complimented the dressing and rice accompaniment. The side salad was reasonable, and the wine recommended by the waiter matched the fish well.

 

After eating so much savoury food, I opted for a simple sorbet to end the meal. As with the main courses, there were not too many desserts to choose from, although the sorbet was very good quality, so I wouldn’t hesitate to go back and try some more!

 

By the time I’d had wine, and included the service charge, the meal came to just over £40. Not cheap, but not unsurprising for a West London bistro. All in all, good value and I would be happy to return – perhaps next time with a larger group to try some more of their special dishes!
